Talk to your professional hair stylist about your up and coming wedding. They will be able to make some suggestions for maintaining your hair in tip top condition prior to and on your wedding day.

Your hair stylist will also will be able to suggest a number of styles that will suit your face shape and can also advise you on the time it will take to grow your hair length if you have fallen in love with an up do hairstyle for your wedding.

Do maintain your hair in top condition with regular haircuts and colour treatments. Talk to your hair stylist about arranging a wedding trial date for you and your bridesmaids in the coming months.

In considering a wedding hairstyle you need to take into account:

  • The wedding theme you have chosen ie formal, informal, garden or beach wedding.
  • The location and the time of the ceremony and reception.
  • The weather.
  • The colour and style of your wedding dress and the hair accessories you have chosen to wear on your wedding day.
  • Do you want to have hairstyle that will last all day?
  • Will a formal up do compliment the style of your wedding gown or a more casual style be more appropriate?
  • Do you want to feel like a princess on your wedding day, be ultra glamorous with a bit of bling, sweet and romantic, or natural and carefree.

Whatever your choice. Do collect photograph clippings from magazines of wedding hairstyles that you like, search the internet, check out your local library and keep this information in a scrapbook or binder for future reference. This will be a great resource to take with you to your hairdresser at your wedding trial.

Generally, most up dos will last all day and night. (I can testify this is the case having had an all up do for my own wedding). Can be very glamorous, is never out of style, are always elegant and stylish and suits a range of face shapes. You can choose from a high swept up bun, a French roll or a low chignon bun. Up styles can be smooth and sleek or can be combined with soft waves or curls. The low chignon is still ultra stylish but is a little less formal.

Tip: Compliment these hairstyles with a stunning tiara and veil or a sparkling diamante hair clasp. The low chignon bun looks great with fresh or silk flowers.

A hairstyle that has some hair up some hair down usually incorporating soft waves or curls is very popular. The hairstyle will last most of the day dependent on your hair type and the weather. This hairstyle is soft and romantic and perfect for a garden or beach wedding.

Tip: Compliment this hairstyle perfectly with diamante or pearl hairpins or small silk rosebuds scattered throughout the hair.

If you have chosen to wear your hair down straight or in cascading curls this will not last throughout the full wedding day. As the curls will tend to drop. This is however a very natural and soft style perfect for the informal wedding.

Tip: You can add a sparkling single hair band or flower for an informal carefree tropical look.

Hair Accessories

There are many choices of hair accessories that will compliment the overall look that you want for your wedding day. Stunning rhinestone tiaras, beaded combs, fresh flowers, silk flowers, diamante hairpins and of course there are varying styles of veils if you have decided to wear one on your wedding day.

Your Hair stylist

Do choose your hair stylist carefully. A good hair stylist will allow time to discuss with you your likes and dislikes, the types of hair products you have used in the past and will try to get to know your personal style before working on your hair. It is also a good idea to check if your hair stylist will come to your home or if you need to attend their salon on your wedding day. If you need to attend their salon it can mean a very early start and you need to factor in travelling time to and from the salon on your wedding day. This can place extra stress on your wedding preparations.

At your wedding trial (2 months before your wedding) take all of the photograph clippings and any other information about the hairstyles that you would like for your wedding with you. Also take with you a scrap of material from your wedding dress or photos of the wedding dress and bridesmaid dresses.

Don’t forget to take your veil and tiara and any other hair accessories you will be wearing on your wedding day. It is also helpful if your Matron of Honor or your bridesmaids can attend the wedding trial.

You can then discuss estimated costs, payment terms and timelines. Obtain a written quote from your hair stylist if possible and ask lot’s of questions and clarify any issues that are not clear. Keep the lines of communication open and honest between you and your hair stylist. It really important if you want to achieve the best result.

Work out a schedule for your wedding day with your hair stylist. Generally, bridesmaids will have their hair done first, then the mother-of-the-bride, other family members and then the bride. Very young children are best left to last.

If you are having your makeup done by another professional ensure that your hair stylist is provided with their name and contact details. These two professionals can then liaise and formulate a plan of action for your wedding day.

Also discuss with your hair stylist a time and date for a colour and cut prior to the wedding day (normally one to two weeks prior). Your hair stylist may also provide you with a suggested hair routine for the evening before your wedding day.

Make up a schedule if you do not already have one and do try and keep to it on your wedding day.

You must feel absolutely confident and trust your hair stylist will achieve the look that you want for your wedding.
